Chapter 74, Page 1

Uma drops by the fraternity and is horrified to discover the Danaher twins, Blaise and Emery, have pledged. They're Tamsin Danaher's younger brothers, the children of one of Uma's mother's employees.

Uma tells Cadmus she's not happy about his new pledges, because they aren't the children of business owners.

"Take a look around you, Uma. The only way this town will function is if we remain economically fluid. Any attempt to try to create a fixed aristocracy is bound to fail. My sister Azalea is engaged to one of those Danahers," Cadmus argues, not remembering offhand which Danaher twin is Azalea's fiance, "If we don't intermix with the employees, we'll grow stagnate and end up intermarrying."

"Well, what's wrong with that?" Uma fumes.

Cadmus is a biology major, and tries to explain the problem of intermarriage to his drama major cousin. She rolls her eyes and says, "Whatever."

Cadmus would rather his extended family stay united in the purpose of realizing all of Chess Founder's dreams. But if Meadow and Uma's line of the family continues in it's current course, they'll destroy everything Chess worked to gain for them. Cadmus will take them down rather than let that happen. "Just focus on building building your sorority, and your businesses. Our reputation and legacy rests on that, not on some bogus sense of nobility," he advises his cousin, hoping she'll see sense before she makes enemies of everyone.

Peridot called and said she had a plan to get revenge on Uma. "She asked me to help her figure out a way to get you away from Paisley. I'm going to pretend to help her, but we'll really be setting her up to get caught cheating by her fiance."

"Sounds great," Declan says, "Where do I fit in?"

"We're going to set up a private meeting between you and Uma. Uma will think I'm setting you up so that Paisley catches you, but actually it willl be Andrew that bursts in on the rendezvous."

"No, absolutely not," Declan refuses with a shudder, "I'm not going near her, not even to pretend. Not even to talk to her about pretending to meet her. Ugh. No."

"You don't have to be there," Peridot answers with a wicked smile, "We're going to tell Uma that you'll only meet her in a disguise, dressed as the llama mascot. But we'll actually be sending a real mascot in to meet her. She'll think it's you, but it will be Amin Fancey. It won't matter to Andrew who she's cheating with, but it will be extra humiliating for Uma to be duped and caught cheating at the same time."

"So it's my job to round up the mascot?" Declan surmises. He has a particular loathing for the costumed weirdos on campus coming into his house uninvited, and has beaten Amin Fancey into submission. He'll do anything Declan tells him to.
