Chapter 69, Page 1

"You said you'd have the money for me by the time I was ready for college: I'm just about ready to go, Cadmus. Where's my money?"

"I had the money, Saffron, but I had to invest it all in the fraternity."

"You invested my money in your fraternity?" Saffron asks, aghast.

"Uma founded a sorority. I had to found a fraternity to match it," Cadmus replies, "Not for me, for our family."

Saffron snorts, "I don't need a fraternity, Cadmus. I want my money."

"I understand where you're coming from, Saffron, because I was there myself when I was your age. Step outside yourself for a minute and look at what's going on in our neighborhood. Meadow and Uma are trying take over our position as Chess' heirs. If we don't keep up with them, and then go them one further, we're going to lose our place in the community."

Her brother's words penetrate through her anger and sink in. "Aunt Meadow has actually been interefering in Chance's love life," she informs him, "It would be really awful if she started telling us all what to do."

Cadmus nods, "Exactly, and Uma is twice as bad, she's taking over the campus now. And that's why I had to found the fraternity, though it took all the profit I made from the bowling alley so far, plus Chance's scholarship money. I know you're angry at me for taking your inheritance, but you will get it back. I don't want us to be enemies, we need to work together to get our family's place back in the community before Meadow and Uma destroy our good name."

"I'm with you," Saffron agrees, seeing the bigger picture her brother painted. "I called you here for advice," she continues, "not to hassle you about my money. I was thinking we should sell the corner market and open a larger grocery store downtown. What do you think?"

"I was thinking along those lines myself when I was at home, I was just too busy with the bowling alley to worry about a new grocery store, too," Cadmus answers, "I think you should go for it."
