Chapter 67, Page 1

Caryl Wilsonoff is in a difficult position. Her daughter Caroline is going steady with Chance Founder, and Caryl's boss, Meadow Founder, is not pleased about this, and has said so several times to her employee. She doesn't want to forbid her daughter to date Chance, but she's deeply worried about her job security. She's seen what Meadow did to her own brother; firing Caryl would be nothing to her. Amin recently got a job as a DJ at The Hub, but his salary is less than a third of Caryl's income, and their family cannot afford to lose her job.

Caryl allowed Caroline to invite him for dinner reluctantly, making her an active participant in the relationship her employer loathes. She's polite, but uncomfortable, and it shows, leaving Chance with the impression that his girlfriend's mother doesn't like him.

After their guest leaves, Caryl has a talk with her daughter, and tells her she doesn't want her seeing Chance anymore. Caroline protests that she's in love and that her mother is ruining her life. Caryl sighs, "Your life would really be ruined if I lost my job. I know you think you love him now, and that he loves you, but he's young now and hasn't come into his own yet. When he does, he'll want to marry a girl more in his 'class', I'm sure, and he'll leave you behind."

"How can you say that, you don't even know him!"

"I don't have to know him to know what his kind are like," Caryl answers her daughter's protest, "I used to date Risk Founder, back in college, but he was never serious about me. He didn't even respect me enogh to break up with me, he just stopped calling and left me hanging."

"I'm not going to let you break up with me over something that stupid," Chance says when Caroline tries to tell him her mother has forbidden them to date because his aunt Meadow doesn't like it. "We don't have that long to wait before we're free to do what we want anyway. I won't get you in trouble with your mother, I'll drop out of sight if I have to, but you are my girl, and I'm not letting you go that easy."
