Moonstone Point
Chapter 3, page 1

Eleanor spent a restless night, unable to sleep, going over and over every minute she spent with Justin, every conversation they had online, her not knowing it was her neighbor she was chatting with. Morning brings no resolution to her mixed emotions, her desire to be with him, to have him kiss her again, and her fear and resentment that he's kept information from her. She can see his house outside her back door: could he be watching her now? she wonders. His windows are empty, suggesting that he's not. Eleanor opens her door and walks toward his house. Thinking about him only worsens her doubt, only talking to him will clear it up.

As she approaches his yard, he comes out of his house, making for his car. "Eleanor!" he greets her with surprise.

"Were you on your way somewhere?" she asks.

"Just up to the Goth house to see old Mortimer," Justin answers.

"And Cassandra?" Eleanor asks before she can bite back the jealousy.

"Cassandra will probably be there, but you have noting to be jealous about."

"That's absurd," Eleanor replies, "Why would I be jealous?"

"Because you think of me as being yours," Justin answers, "And your territorial instincts lead you to defend what is yours from interlopers, even when they pose no actual threat."

"I do not think of you as mine!" Eleanor rejects the idea.

"Then why are you jealous of Cassandra? Are you lying for my benefit, or are you just fooling yourself?"

"Presumptuous!" is the only answer Eleanor can give. Why is she jealous? she wonders, knowing that she is jealous despite her efforts not to be.
